Challenge: to identify creative solutions for developing a unified Zimbabwean Community support network
Location: Toronto, Canada
Date: May 2006
In May 2006, 28 Zimbabwe community members from Ontario met to identify creative solutions for developing a unified Zimbabwean Community support network. The aim was to help the approximately 9,000 Zimbabweans make a smooth transition into Canadian society.
The session was coordinated through Facilitators Without Borders in partnership with ZimAlternative, a not-for-profit community group dedicated to the positive integration of Zimbabweans into Canadian society.
FWB conducted a one day session facilitated by Kristen Peterson, John Sedgwick and Tim Hurson. The group emerged with three projects, which Diana Mavunduse, co-founder of ZimAlternative describes as:
1. Infrastructure: To develop an effective Zimbabwe organizational infrastructure with operational guidelines, priorities and projects.
2. Communications Network: To provide a credible multi-channeled communication network that provides useful information
3. Educational and Cultural programs: To identify and mobilize human and financial resources for the Zimbabwe community to develop an inclusive educational and cultural program that benefits Zimbabweans over and above geography and diversity.
According to Vuso Moyana, co-founder of ZimAlternative, "It was a historic occasion as it provided an opportunity to spell out our long term vision collectively as community representatives. The passion and interest shown by participants was beyond expectation".
The benefits of these projects will be to provide Zimbabwe immigrants with information, referrals, networking, and support in their transition to Canada. Community leaders are in the process of planning the projects to be implemented in the short, medium and long term.
"Bringing People to Solutions" is a powerful statement which proved so true during the intense community building and outreach workshop kindly facilitated by the competent, dynamic team from Facilitators Without Borders (FWB). What started off as a dream now has the potential to transform a community.
