Chironda wins Zimbabwe's first AfricaCanada beauty pageant title!

Zimbabwe's Andriata Chironda was an easy winner at the Miss AfricaCanada beauty pageant  tonight (Oct. 31).

Chironda, a historian and activist, was reportedly one of the early favourites for the crown, held at York University.

The Toronto resident is the first Zimbabwean to walk away winner at the annual pagent dubbed "Africa's heritage night". Rejoice Choto was runner up in 2005.

Previous winners include Ghana's Helena Obeng (2008) and Sierra Leone's Zainab Godwin (2007).

Writing before her triumph she said "getting on that team (school quiz team) and not soiling my undergarments in trepidation was probably my biggest achievement to date.”

Are the recent changes in Canada’s immigration and refugee laws a sign of major reform?

On July 14th, Jason Kenney, Canada’s Citizenship, Immigration, and Multiculturalism Minister, officially announced that Czech and Mexican citizens will have to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa if they wish to enter the country for temporary purposes. Specifically, those wishing to visit, study or work in Canada for an interim period will have to send their applications for visas to the Embassy of Canada in their respective countries, and meet specific requirements to receive one before they travel.

Gov't Inaction Places Kimberley Process at Great Risk

Partnership Africa Canada's Diamonds and Human Security Annual Review for 2009 concluded that the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is failing, but this is not due to warlords and sanctions busters. The group warned that those governments that refuse to get tough on smuggling, human rights abuses, and money laundering were placing the scheme at high risk of collapse.
